One of the reasons why soccer is growing in popularity and participation is because you don’t need to spend a lot of money on equipment to play.
When you register to play recreational (house league) soccer, the fee that you pay to the association/league/organization almost always includes the following:
- Uniform Kit (Jersey, Shorts, Socks)
- Field Fees
- Referee’s Fees
- A ball at every game
- Administration Fees
For youth soccer, the fees usually also include:
- Team picture
- Individual picture
- Year End Banquet or Party
- Trophy or Medal
Some fees might also include:
- A soccer ball for each individual player
- A backpack or duffel bag
After you’ve signed up for soccer, and are eagerly anticipating your first practice, game or team get-together, you’ll need to purchase the following items yourself:
- Shin Guards (mandatory)
- Shoes (must be soccer-specific, and are mandatory for all ages except for perhaps 3, 4 and 5 years olds).
These are really the only 2 items that you need to play organized soccer!
However, to make things easier/more convenient, you might also want to consider purchasing the following additional items:
- Personal water bottle (never to be shared!)
- 1 or 2 extra pairs of socks (for practice, or for when your team socks are dirty)
- An extra pair of shorts (for practice)
- An extra jersey or t-shirt (for practice)
- A hand pump to keep your ball properly inflated.
- A sport bag, duffel bag or backpack to keep everything easy to transport and carry.
You can purchase any of the above items at any sporting goods or mass merchant department store ranging from $5 to $50 each, depending on the quality and product features that you desire, the brand that you want, and the retailer that you shop at.
